If your ticket is before the start of use and still in the valid period (up to your scheduled train departure time), you will receive a refund after a handling fee is deducted.
Handling fees vary depending on the type of ticket. For example, for reserved seat Ltd. Express ticket and First Class (Green Car) ticket, handling fee will be different if the refund is processed by 2 days before the departure date or if it is processed 1 day before the departure date up to the time of departure. Please ask the station staff.
The same process applies for the cancellation of the return portion of a round-trip ticket. However, as half of the ticket (ticket for outward trip) has already been used, the remaining fare of a one-way ticket (or the non-discounted one-way ticket fare if the ticket is a discounted round trip ticket) will be refunded after a handling fee of 220 yen is deducted.
Discount tickets and tourist pass for visitors travelling to Japan from overseas that are unused and before the start of the validity period or during the validity period may be refunded for the purchase price minus a handling fee at some JR Ticket Office (JR West ticket office).
The stations that can process refunds for these tickets and passes are limited, and there may be conditions for refunds. Please consult with station staff for more details.
